SMF has announced that the next release will be SMF 2.0.
If everything goes as planned it should be available to charter members in june.
And a first public beta should be somewhere in october.

This are the current implemented features:
  • Database abstraction - with support for PostgreSQL and SQLite planned alongside that of MySQL.
  • Automatic installation of packages into themes other than just the default.
  • Email templates to simplify customization of forum emails.
  • Moderation center including post, topic and attachment moderation - to allow approving of user content before it is made public.
  • User warning system.
  • Additional group functionally including group moderators and requestable/free assignable groups.
  • WYSIWYG editor to provide an intuitive user interface to those users not familiar with BBC.
  • Permission improvements such as group inheritance and permission profiles to further reduce the complexity of the permissions system.
  • File based caching for a performance increase on all forums regardless of whether an accelerator is installed.
  • Mail queuing system to stagger the sending of emails to improve performance on large forums.
  • Advanced signature settings to allow the administrator of a forum to more tightly control the contents of users signatures.
  • Personal messaging improvements including ability to automatically sort incoming messages and a variety of display options.
  • Improved upgrade script with better timeout protection and simpler user interface.
  • Custom profile fields to enable administrators to add additional member fields from the administration center.

But more could be added!
Also lots of improvements, under the hood.

And here are a few teaser screenshots:

Wow this is good news, however, it's going to cause a conflict with old mods., so some users might not upgrade right away, the same goes with themes, unless the new version didn't change the way themes and mods. worked.

This is going to pressure the other forum scripts to release their "ultimate" versions as well. For phpbb, it's phpbb3 for MyBB it's MyBB 1.4 which is suppose to be way better than SMF.

Haven't seen any features for MyBB 1.4.
But I do believe that SMF is becoming serious competition for vBulletin once they release 2.0

They haven't showed any full preview of MyBB 1.4 but the mods. system will have improved greatly. The main advantage right now is that 95% of MyBB mods. don't mess around with the theme, in SMF they do, and you have to either use the default theme, or edit the code yourself.

Let's see if SMF 2.0 will fix that, and yeah VB is going to have a lot of competition, and IPB too. They might have to lower their prices.

I want to be a charter member, I also wish they had a User CP like VB. That is really the only compliant that I get from my members

What I would like to see instead of it being a mod, which would help out in RP forums, is the ability to link up to 3 or 4 accounts to a single one...

There has been a new announcement for SMF 2.0
They won't be able to release the first charter member release this month.
A few bugs in 1.1.2 and 2.0 and real life for the developers are the cause of it.
They are aiming for August now for the first release.

Anyway, read this for more info: An update on 2.0
