Free Advertising Methods.

To get activity on a (new) forum, you have to advertise it.
There are several ways to advertise a forum or a website.
In the following article I'll give a brief overview.

There are several ways to advertise your forum for free.
I'll give a small list of possibilities and a small explanation.

Directories
There are thousands of directories on the internet where you can submit your forum too.
Each directory you submit your forum too, will get you another backlink to improve your search engine rankings + the possibility that visitors of that site will go to your forum.
Most famous and probably also the best directory is DMOZ.
But it's very difficult to get in that directory.
A list of good directories can be found in the following topic on the forum Admin tips > Directories.

Search Engines.
You also have to submit your forum/site to as many search engines as possible.
Defiantly too, the 3 big ones (Google, Yahoo and MSN), but also to the smaller ones.

Post exchanges
Post exchanges are a great way to advertise your forum and get activity on your forum at the same time.
If you do post exchanges you can put a link to your own forum in your signature on every forum that you do exchanges with (as long as it's allowed).
Other members of the forum will be able to see your signature with the link to your own forum, and maybe click it.

Link exchanges.
You can also do link exchanges with other forums/website.
Visitors of that website/forum can see that link, and maybe click it.
This is also a good way to get more backlinks to improve your SE rankings.

Paid advertising.
There are also a lot of paid advertising methods, like Google Adwords, Bidvertiser...
Personally I never used these methods, and I doubt I will ever use it.

There are also sites that sell advertising space or links on their site. This can be a good way to get more visitors and higher page rank, because often those are big websites with a lot of traffic and a high page rank.
Downside is that it's pretty expensive most of the time.

Hopefully this article gave you a good start to advertise your forum.
