Just recieved a PM on a certain site telling me that I violated their TOS because I posted with a link in my sig to a "competing site" (this one).
Can understand it that they don't want  it, and my mistake that I overlooked it.
But they only said something about it after I requested a review for this site.
And the link in my sig was there for over 4 MONTHS!!
In that time I made over 250 quality posts and never did plain advertising for my forum.
Always tried to make constructive posts.

Also recieved a PM that I was always close to the line with the "advertising", but the review request was over it. So they had to take actions (deleting my review request and removing the link in my sig).

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this?
Should they've said something as soon as I had the link in my sig or did they do the right thing?

Sounds a bit crazy to me. I'd prefer to state that if somebody links out from me, then they should link back to me from a similar or higher ranking page of relevance to my site. That way I could rather keep my member happy, while gaining backlinks! wink

And will you ask this for every signature link or only if it's from a competing site?
Your idea sounds fair though.

Well, in terms of pagerank, it really shouldn't even be necessary to ask - it should be a courtesy among webmasters!

Although I'm not a stickler on it every time, but certainly where it's blatant linking devoid of purpose in illustrating a point, for example - those types of links should go in signatures, really.

Internet is full of those Nazis, man ...

I can kind of understand why some webmasters want to set rules and guidelines.  I can also understand if they are exchanging posts, then they probably want to set a certain standard.  But ... if you're just posting in some forum as a contributing member, then they shouldn't be telling you what to do.  It's very ... uh counter productive.

Agreed.
It's actually the second time it happened to me.
And to be honest, I hardly visit those forums anymore....

Yeah, once you PM and complain, it's all over in most cases.  If I get a PM complaining about whatever I am doing, I'd generally leave that forum forever.  If I PM a member and complain about his/her behavior, I kind of expect that he/she wouldn't come back to my forum any longer.

Just remeberd that I posted an article on that site.
It's the best article I've written so far (from a total of about 5 articles Tongue )

What would you do, ask the staff to delete that thread?
There is no longer a link in that post or in my sig to my site.
So I don't recieve any benefit of having that article there, so why would they get the benefit of having it there?

Btw, it's the "5 Steps to revive a dead forum" article that can also be found here.
It's the article that has the most views on ezinearticles, saw it on other websites and forums aswell,... So it's pretty popular I think.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother.  It'll be a waste of time and effort.  Unless steak is too high, you want to just ignore cheaters and scammers.  The more time you spend, the more you lose.  That's essentially how cheaters and scammers steal from you.

I know this is a little late in coming, but that site admin was out of order. If they want to put up rules and guidelines about things such as sigs, then they should enforce them 100% of the time, not just when they feel like it. Granted that may mean a little effort, but hey..they're admins, it's their job.

As for your article. i would send the admin a PM or an email requesting that they remove it. It's your intellectual property and by removing your link from it they are in copyright breach (copyright is assumed and protected by the bearn(sp) convention, not bought as in a patent)

At the end of the day, the internet is a series of back links so adding a few more is harmless, and if the sites are related in some way, it's benificial to allow them. From what you say, this person would have been OK if your site was completely unrelated to his..but what would the point be then?
