If you are making a theme for a forum, where do you get the icons for it?
Or do you create everything yourself?

(icons = buttons and images for forums, new posts, options,....)

And do you ask somebody to create them or just use google to find good one?
Not afraid of copyright violations?

I've done a mix of creating my own and modifying the stock ones that came with vBulletin.  I think the most important ones to make your own are the ones that show on the main page where you browse forums.

I finally took the plunge and made my own buttons for the seemer theme; I will include a bunch of blanks of different sizes. It was fun, but it is tedious.

for normal buttons I also make my own maintab and mirrortab graphics. it is easy, make the button or shape first, and then cut the left and right side, which leaves the middle, and then put the pixel with of the end pieces in the styles.css.  those are easy to do.

I also have a collection of icons that I modify to make message board icons, of which I have very many.  Look around the web for smileys and avatars, I have oodles of them too.

its worth it to give your members lots of choices

We had a banner contest.  We made our own icons to match those.

I create everything myself with Inkscape. It's really simple in fact.
