I kept the default SMF layout - only changed a few things in template files and css file to match my site's color scheme and my own person preferences.  I don't seem to have broken anything...yet.

We are using the main site also.  We tweak the colours.
My coadmin is great at this.  Girlyman is one of my favourites also.
We have about four custom templates on our site.
