Not post exchange, but need some help.

Hello everyone.
This is not quite a request for a post exchange, but something a little different. I think my forum is fairly active, but it's nowhere close to where I want it to be. That's not really a major concern to me right now though. What does bother me, is that I have to spend too much time on the forum and I haven't found the time to finish developing other aspects of my website. Anyway, maybe I don't
have
to spend so much time on the forum, but I feel that if I am not online and posting there much that the activity will decrease substantially.
Many guests come to my forum, but they don't sign up. I think that maybe if they saw more people online that they would sign up or at least stick around for longer. So what I would like is for people to register for my website's forum and then just be online while you are going about your regular business. You don't have to post anything at all, but an introduction would be nice, but it certainly is not required or even expected. I increased the online time threshold to 30 mins, so while you are on your own forum or wherever, if you could just refresh the page once every 30 mins or so that is basically what I am looking for.
I am open to suggestions, so if there is something that you would like in return feel free to reply here or send my a PM. The forum in question is the one in my signature. OH, and I should mention that my forum allows signature links, so if you do introduce yourself that might actually benefit you.
Haha, but please if you choose to introduce yourself don't make it look like you're spamming or only joining to promote your website....
Ok, let me know what you think, or what you would like in return.
Harro, if thsi is in the wrong place, my apologies, but this looked like the most suitable area to post this.

One thing you need to look at is this. Lets say ten people from over here join up and do as you asked them to do and you get the same guests daily looking at your site and they see these same people on all the time but your activity and content is not growing. What do you think they will think?
I have noticed that when guests look around a forum they are looking for specific things that are common to that forum, some people actually do care about content and the amount of posts that a forum has. They seem to be more interested when a forum has posts and topics.
I have the same problem, I have alot of guests coming by my forum and alot of them are the same. I log guests ips and they are matched up everytime that ip comes across. I thought about that one time, then I realized that to do that would in someways be lying and deceiving your guests and sometimes even your members.
A post exchange works out a little better, since you have activity and someone with an active account for that many posts agreed upon. Then if the person is really interested in your forum, perhaps they will remain active and stick around giving you one more member.
You could even do link exchanges with other members, that would bring activity and possible more members.
Maybe adding some mods could work, perhaps a shop, give your members something to look forward to when they post and even let guests know about the shop if they join, an arcade to give members something to do, some guests will see this and join to see what games you have to offer them. Perhaps even the custom profile mod and some other mods they have at SMF. You could even think about tinyportal, this would give you more expansion to the forum allowing you to give announcements and all right where people can look.
Those are just my opinions and you were asking for ideas....

Firstly, thank you for your advice; a shop is definitely something that I will consider in the future.
Maybe having people online is deceptive, but my justification is that due to a time difference, too many users, from say the United States will come online during non-peak times. I think my forum is active enough for the amount of promotion I have done to date, but I'm sure some people would have considered joining if there were more people online when they visited.
Oh, and I added to your reputation, because I really appreciate your well thought out answer.
I am also interested in post and link exchanges, but I haven't found anyone willing to do that as yet. I think just being online is a lot easier for people to do, so I was hoping to get a better response to this.

Thanks for the Reputation...
Well, I am always willing to link exchange with anyone who wants to. If you wish to link exchange with me, send me your button and I will send you mind or if you just want me to put you up in my links section I will do that as well. Post exchanges with me are hard, becuase the type of forum I run is a writing/rp community and to post exchange I am looking for those who can keep to the continuety of my forum. But if you think that is something you would like to try, then we could do a post exchange as well...Then I will have an account on your board, that would have posts attached to it...
If you need anything else, like ideas for mods that could work, just feel free to ask and I will see what I can do to help you.

I kinda like your idea, but ghost has mentioned a few things as well.
But what about doing a post exchange and combine that with a minimum time online?
Since you're using SMF you can easily see how long a user has been logged in.
So do a post exchange and as an extra requirement "x hours logged in".
Just an idea

I was just thinking something like that as well. Thanks for your suggestion. Haha, +rep for you too!
@Ghost, I've had a look at your forum before, and I think it would be rather hard for me to make a valuable contribution there, so I guess we can't establish a post exchange.

Thats alright, as I said it is hard to do a post exchange with me because of what my forum intails. But if you would like to do a banner exchange I am up for that, I am going to be re-vamping my website a little and redoing some of the affiliate links, so if you are interested just send me a copy of your affiliate button and I will send you mine and we can do it that way...
