Let's create a list of good directories where we can submit our forums too.
Only post good directories, where you personaly would submit your forum too.

http://dmoz.org
http://www.forumvirus.com/
http://www.ngey.com
http://www.teendirectory.net
http://www.webmasterdir.net (only for webmaster related sites)
http://www.dirone.com

And here's a great topsite list for free directories:

directories are good for increasing your pr.
even though you seldom get traffic from them.

True.
But with a high PR you'll get better search engine rankings and more visitors from search engines.

I've been hearing a lot nowadays from various other forums I've been visiting where more often nowadays people are downplaying directories, and even think DMOZ is no longer all it was once trumped up to be.

I've actually wondered myself what really makes the difference between a directory and a link farm? Don't they look just about the same to a spider?

Link farms are pages with just links on them.
There are a few advantages with directories.
Most of the time you can submit a small description aswell.
Also directories are categorized. So your link will appear together with other websites on the same subject.
I'm not sure about it, but I believe it's also something that could increase your page rankings.

Ah yes, I wasn't thinking i.t.o. descriptions.

So if you start your own directory, then it should be beneficial to include as large a description for each site then, shouldn't it?

Could be.
But if it's to large people won't read it.
So for real visitors I think a small 4-5 line description should be enough.

I actually started a directory for .uk sites, but I'm not too happy with the initial descriptions I've pre-populated with - just wanted really to make it a non-empty directory in the hope that it might gain more interest.

Here it is (you can delete this link if you wish after having a look)

Got any suggestions there?

The best think to higher your pr is write article and put it at arcitle directory, since you can arrange the keywords you choose with article you write.

I have a new SMF Directory as well. Registration is required to prevent nasty spamming and hundreds of unrelated sites from being submitted.

This is probably the most comprehensive list of free search directories.  You probably need to do more than just submitting to free search directories, but this is one sure way to acquire one way links.  Time consuming, but I personally think that it's worth it.

Indeed time consuming, and very boring aswell to be honest.
But it's indeed worth it.
But it's also something I definatly need to do more often... Tried to set a goal once to submit this forum to 1 or 2 directories a day. But that didn't last very long...
