Some argue that if your site is a quality site, then your site will get number of inbound links naturally, but your site has to be a very very very good one in order for that to happen.  Yes, search directory submission is boring and time consuming, but it's a critical part of SEO.  Article submission is another great way to acquire inbound links, but ...  search directory submission is still very important.

Here is a good tool I came across over at digital point for submitting to directories .

http://www.submitsuite.com/products.htm

The thread for discussion is

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=174686

I personally think the software is great and can save you alot of time and keep you organized.  Breaks down directories with PR as well and if there is a directory that you would like them to use they will add it to the software.

Think I saw it before.
Never tried it out though.
What kind of limitations are there on the trial versions?

Seems like it's pretty successful. You already have a few links there Smile

I have 57 active links inside SMfoogle.com . My directory is relatively new, I don't know if people have had a chance to check their server logs or Google Analytics to determine how much traffic comes from the directory.

I'd be interested to find out.

Seems like 4 hits this month came from your directory.
2 from the category and 2 from the index page.

For anyone running a vBulletin-based forum (only -- doesn't work on any other type to my knowledge), there's a general forum where posts are taken from your forum and sent to a general forum. From there, visitors can see the content of your threads and post, and from there, can join in on the discussion. In our case, my site aquired over 120 members in three weeks (I kid you not).

Here's the site: vBIspy.com

Never heard of it before.
Sounds like a good idea!

The only drawback to using these a large general forum like vBIspy.com is that you get no guarantee that the people who join will actually post. I've never been able to figure out why people who join don't post (that is the object of joining, no?).

While I don't think that the SMF software you use here is compatible with the vB one, I would presume that the owners of SMF probably have some kind of site that is similar to the vBIspy one (it's not an original idea, so I've been told).

For me, a lot of them are spammers.
So I added email verification. They stopped posting.

Don't think SMF has such a thing (except for an RSS injector).
And there are lots of people on every forum that joined but never post.
It's indeed a bit stupid, but it's just the way it is Tongue

I think directory submission is worth the time or money it takes. Those are lifetime links, hopefully in the future those crappy directories we see today will be better.

Harro, thanks for including my directory webmasterdir.net in your list Smile.
