The leading search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, use crawlers  to find pages for their algorithmic search results. Pages that are linked from other search engine indexed pages do not need to be submitted because they are found automatically. Some search engines, notably Yahoo!, operate a paid submission service that guarantee crawling for either a set fee or cost per click.

I am planning to set up a site, but I am not really sure if it will be seen on major search engines.

BTW, considering all the search engines, what do you think is the most reliable to determine the page ranking of a website? Is it Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc?

It's not easy to get top ranking in any search engines. It needs time and hard work. However, Google would be your biggest resource to drive organic traffic to your website.
