Hi Miko, Harro and Everyone!

Ok..let me see if I can explain this so you can get the picture...because I cannot get a screen shot of it...or do anything else with it for that matter!

This top-to-bottom vertical "Menu" popped up on the left side of my desktop...with the choices of:

Folder Tasks

Other Places

Details

(the Details describe whichever shortcut I click on)

It looks just like the "Menu" that displays when you click on
My Computer, which gives you the choices of:

System Tasks

Other Places

Details

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it???
I only want shortcuts on my desktop...not this thing!

Much thanks!
Linda

To be honest I got no idea what to think of it...
Why can't you take a screenshot of it?

Anyway, when did it come up? After you installed something?
Does it actually do something usefull?
Try running ad-aware or spybot to see if it's spyware.

Yeah - it could be any number of things.
If you could post up a screen shot, I might be able to help -depending on what it is.

Re: Your desktop - If you right click on the side menu - does it give you any options?

Hi Miko!

Can't click on it...can't do anything with it!  It just sits there taking up space!  Ugh!  Sad

Thanks for the heads-up re finding the sig.  Went right to it!
(Funny how I missed that after going over all the options
HOW MANY times! Jeez!)

Getting back to the "unwanted menu"...I am thinking maybe it took the place of the "My Documents shortcut"...since IT is not there anymore...and this huge "menu" thing ABOUT My Documents IS!
(the "Details" gives details about the shortcuts.)

Is that possible?  (You know I am "techno-challenged".) Blink

Could it be a function of the shortcut?

Thanks Miko!

Linda

I tried getting that effect on my pc and found that if I just drag a folder from the desktop to the side of the screen - the same thing happens.

The problem is, I've been able to disable it simply by right-clicking and selecting "Close Toolbar"

I'm not sure why it won't do that for you.

Let me ask you which operating system you are using? This could give us all a better idea of how to handle the problem. Also, if you have any virus scanners, spyware detectors or anything like that, I suggest running them immediatley and if you don't you need to get some, I have noticed when you have a file that wont allow you to do anything to it, it is sometimes a virus or spyware linked to another program of some sort.

When you run these scans, you will need to disconnct your computer from the net, if you are using DSL or Cable just turn off your modem and disconnet the USB or Ethernet cable from the computer. If you are using a phone line, just disconnect it from the computer.

I had a problem like this on a friends computer that I had to get rid of for him and it turned out to be spyware. So, try all this. Also, you should check to see if some of the following works properly.

Mediaplayer (Or what ever you are using to play music.)
Internet Explorer, Firefox, sufari etc.

I only say that becuase sometimes spyware of even viruses will imbed themselves in those files to remain hidden and create things that should not be there.

Oh jeez, Ghost...
I am so sorry for not replying sooner...
don't know how I missed this...I apologize!

I have been extremely busy lately and am
probably behind on everything!

I will check and do everything you said this weekend!

Thank you so much!

I really appreciate your taking the time to write and try
to help me figure it out!

~Linda~

P.S. FYI...in case you haven't heard yet...and are interested,
TechSmith is giving away full licenses of Camtasia3 and SnagIt7.
I posted about it on www.MakeUseOf.com...you can get the links to download there.

I'll post elsewhere here too, in case somebody hasn't heard.
